Data regarding the foundation and evolution of the National College of Art and Design traces back to the establishment of Robert West's drawing school in George's Lane in 1746, which was funded by the Dublin Society. This institution has been greatly influenced by the French Enlightenment, Victorian schools of design, the Arts and Crafts movement, the search for Irish national identity, and developments in British art education in the 1960s. The college has played a significant role in shaping Irish social and cultural developments, particularly in the field of painting, sculpture, and applied adornment in architecture and crafts during the 18th century. Notable Irish artists, such as Sir William Orpen and Oliver Sheppard, have also studied at this prestigious institution. The college has been a driving force in pushing for the reform of industrial design, especially after Ireland gained independence and was looking towards a new economic future. To further strengthen its academic independence, a statute was passed in 1971, giving the college greater autonomy. In 1975, there was a major reformation, expanding the range of degree programs. The college relocated to Thomas Street in the early 1980s, allowing for further expansion of the undergraduate program and the addition of various postgraduate courses and research-based options, including doctoral level studies.
