The Internship Work Permit is required for students enrolled in a program that has mandatory co-op or internship terms. This permit must be obtained together with the Study Permit. If the co-op or internship starts in the first term, the application for the Co-op/Internship Work Permit must be submitted along with the Study Permit. It is advised to apply for the co-op/internship work visa at least three months before the internship begins to prevent any procedural delays. This application is free of cost and can be processed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The processing times for study permits can also be found on their website. In order to be eligible for this permit, the student must have a valid Study Permit, the program must require employment, and the work must be less than 50% of the program. On-campus work does not require a work permit as long as the student is enrolled full-time and during scheduled breaks, and the last term before graduation. As for off-campus work, the Study Permit granted to the student will automatically authorize them to work for 20 hours per week throughout the academic session and full-time during specified breaks. No separate work permit is necessary if the Study Permit is already approved.
