Northern Illinois University (NIU) was established in 1895 by Governor John P. Altgeld, and its primary campus is located in Dekalb, Illinois. With multiple locations, including Chicago, Naperville, and Rockford, NIU has seven comprehensive colleges that cover areas such as business, education, law, health, human science, engineering, technology, liberal arts, and sciences, as well as visual and performing arts. Recognized as one of the top business colleges, NIU is ranked 298th in National Universities and 703rd in Global Universities by the US News and World Report 2021. NIU has earned the designation of a high research activity institution by the Carnegie Foundation, and it ranks 157th in undergraduate business by US News and World Report 2021. NIU's main campus in Dekalb spreads across an extensive 765 acres and offers over 100 undergraduate programs and 80 graduate programs, including minors, certificates, pre-professional studies, integrated programs, specialist degree programs, doctoral and research programs, as well as off-campus options. The university has 42 schools and departments across its seven degree-granting colleges.
