The Victory Institute was founded in 1993 by LGBTQ activists and philanthropists who saw a crucial need to equip and support LGBTQ candidates in government positions nationwide. With a bleak representation of less than 50 openly LGBTQ elected officials at any level of government in the United States, our founders recognized that increasing our numbers in public service was vital for advancing equality. This led to the establishment of the Victory Institute, which focuses on educating potential candidates and campaign workers, providing them with knowledge and resources to pursue careers in government. Additionally, the Foundation launched the Presidential Appointments Project, resulting in Roberta Achtenberg becoming the first openly LGBTQ presidential appointee to a Senate-confirmed position as Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Eligibility of Victory Institute

The Victory Congressional Internship offers opportunities for undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds to participate in a unique internship experience in Washington, D.C. All students, regardless of gender, orientation, ability, ethnicity, or political affiliation are encouraged to apply. We especially welcome women, people of colour, trans individuals, persons with disabilities, and individuals from low-income families to apply and bring their perspectives to the program. Eligibility for the internship requires applicants to be members of the LGBTQ+ community and must be U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, or have work permits (Note: students with F-1 visas are not eligible). Eligible applicants must also be at least 18 years old before arriving in Washington, D.C. and have completed at least one year of an undergraduate program. For summer participants, at least one full semester must remain after the program ends (i.e., students who graduate before or during the summer program are not eligible). Spring and fall program participants must not graduate before the program ends. We welcome applicants from diverse fields of study. Active involvement in public and/or community service projects is highly valued. It is important to note that individuals who identify as "allies" of the LGBTQ+ community do not meet the eligibility requirements for this program.

The Victory Institute's Victory Congressional Internship is dedicated to shaping the future generation of LGBTQ public leaders. This program offers exceptional LGBTQ college students the opportunity to intern in Washington, DC, for a semester and participate in an intensive leadership program. This includes: - Working as an intern for eight to ten weeks with a member of Congress from the LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus or a pro-LGBTQ Congress member, gaining first-hand knowledge about the federal legislative process - An educational and leadership development program that exposes participants to potential careers in policymaking and allows them to network and learn from experts in various fields within the District of Columbia - Attendance at the biennial International LGBTQ Leaders Conference, where students can engage with over a hundred openly LGBTQ leaders in government, politics, activism, business, and community organizations Through the Victory Congressional Internship, young LGBTQ individuals will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to become well-informed decision-makers and influential leaders who can positively impact their communities and society as a whole.
