Placements

The university offers various options for healthcare students seeking unique placement opportunities in the Northern Territory. These placements are available in a wide range of locations, including rural desert towns and the diverse cities of Darwin and Alice Springs. Students have the opportunity to learn and get involved in their communities, promoting the overall well-being of the population. Flinders NT supports and encourages students to embrace these experiences and make the most of their learning opportunities. Flinders NT arranges internships for medical students at the Royal Darwin Hospital and the Alice Springs Hospital. These placements are open to students in their penultimate or final year of a medical degree and require a minimum of four or eight weeks. However, placement availability and clearance must be taken into consideration. Placements in Darwin are subject to availability and formal clearance and can potentially be found in departments such as Anesthesia & Perioperative, Cardiology, Communicable Disease Control, Ear, Nose & Throat, Emergency, Endocrinology & Diabetes, General Medicine, Geriatrics, Hematology/Medical Oncology, Immunology/Rheumatology, Intensive Care Unit, Maxillofacial Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Palliative Care, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Rehabilitation, Renal Medicine, and Respiratory Medicine. Meanwhile, placements in Alice Springs are open to domestic students only and require formal approval in addition to availability. Potential departments include Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecologic, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatric, Psychiatry, and Renal Medicine. Before starting a placement in the NT, it is essential to obtain clearance to work with children (Ochre Card). This process can take up to eight weeks, so it is recommended to apply at least that much in advance. If the card has not been received by then, it is advised to follow up with Safe NT until a response is received. Please note that online applications for the Ochre Card are not accepted for international students; instead, a paper application must be completed and mailed. The teaching hospital affiliated with Flinders Medical Centre can accommodate a limited number of visiting final-year medical students for clinical electives. These electives can be completed for a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of eight weeks. The Remote and Rural Interprofessional Placement Learning NT (RIPPL NT) team provides support and assistance for allied health and nursing students, their universities, and clinical supervisors to optimize their clinical placements in the Northern Territory. All students enrolled in health-related courses are welcome to take advantage of these services.
