Eligibility of Western Illinois University
Requirements for Admission
To be considered for admission, you must meet certain requirements based on your student level. Please see the sections below for more information.
Freshman Year
In order to be eligible for admission, you must have a high school diploma or a certificate that is equivalent to a high school diploma in the United States. Additionally, you must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Please note that all grades and scores will be translated to a scale of 4.0.
If you are a non-native English speaker, you will be required to take an English proficiency exam such as TOEFL, IELTS, ITEP, or PTE Academic. Our school code for these exams is 1900. Student Transfer
If you are looking to transfer to our university, you must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale for all college-level coursework attempted. You must also be in good standing at your previous institution. It is important to note that all grades and scores will be translated to a scale of 4.0.
If you have completed less than 24 semester hours, you will also need to meet the entrance requirements for freshman students.
Similar to freshman applicants, non-native English speakers will need to demonstrate their English proficiency by taking one of the approved exams mentioned above.

Doctoral Students
To be considered for our doctoral programs, you must hold a degree that is equivalent to a recognized bachelor's degree in the United States. Additionally, you must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the last two years of your undergraduate studies, or a total GPA of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale for all college courses attempted. As with all other applicants, all grades and scores will be translated to a scale of 4.0. If your desired program has a higher GPA requirement, please refer to the Departmental Admission Requirements.
Non-native English speakers must meet the same English proficiency requirements as mentioned above. Please note that some academic programs may have higher English proficiency requirements for admission.
